Phimosis

Phimosis is a condition that occurs in uncircumcised men when the foreskin cannot be pulled over the head of the penis.

Causes.

Phimosis may be cause by frequent irritation or infection of the foreskin, however, it is most commonly idiopathic in origin (no identifiable cause).

Phimosis can also be associated with diabetes and may be a presenting sign of the disease.

Treatment.

Most men with phimosis will need a circumcision. However, a trial of steroid cream may be enough to treat phimosis in some men.

Circumcision is an outpatient (no hospital overnight stay required) surgery where the foreskin is removed.
