Vasectomy Reversal

As many as 1 in 10 couples will have a change in life circumstance after vasectomy and desire more children.

What is vasectomy reversal?

Vasectomy reversal is a microsurgical procedure where the cut ends of the vas deferens (the tube that carries sperm) are either reconnected directly (vasovasostomy) or connected to the epididymis (vasoepididymostomy). Using a surgical microscope, they vas is magnified 40x and reconnected using sutures finer than the width of your hair.

Today, microsurgical vasectomy reversal has become one of the most successful, simple and cost-effective ways to help couples achieve pregnancy after vasectomy.

Dr. Mills is the only Urologist in the Central Coast fellowship trained in microsurgical vasectomy reversal.

How successful is vasectomy reversal?

While length of time and location of your vasectomy are factors in the success of reversal, there is no time cutoff where reversal will not work. At the time of surgery, we analyze fluid from the vas deferens for color, consistency and contents to determine if a direct connection is possible. For men who undergo vasovasostomy (direct reconnection), 90+ percent of men have sperm in their ejaculate postoperatively. For men who need a bypass procedure (vasoepididymostomy), the success rate is 60-70 percent.
