Vasectomy

The most effective method of birth control after abstinence.

Vasectomy is the most common urologic procedure in the US with over 500,000 performed yearly.

Why vasectomy?

Lose the birth control.

With vasectomy, you and your partner will no longer need any other form of birth control to prevent pregnancy (no condoms, pills, IUDs, etc.). It is important to note, however, vasectomy does not protect against or prevent transmission of sexually transmitted infections.

It’s effective.

Vasectomy is the most effective form of birth control (aside of course from not having sexual intercourse) with 99.95% efficacy at preventing unwanted births.

It’s safe.

It is a quick, office based procedure with no need for general anesthesia and few risks.

It’s less invasive and less costly than tubal ligation.

Tubal ligation (also known as getting your tubes tied) is a surgical procedure performed on women keeping eggs from reaching the uterus to prevent pregnancy. Because of the invasive nature of the procedure, and the need for general anesthesia, tubal ligation can cost several thousand dollars.

How does it work?

Sperm is made in the testicle and travels to the epididymis, a c-shaped organ connected to the testicle, where it matures and is stored until ejaculation. With ejaculation, sperm travels through the vas deferens to the outside world.

During a vasectomy, the vas deferens is cut and blocked to prevent sperm from leaving your body.

While it should be considered a permanent sterilizing procedure, it is possible to reconnect the vas deferens with a vasectomy reversal.
