Epididymal Cysts & Spermatoceles

What are they?

The epididymis is a c-shaped organ connected to the testicle that acts as a reservoir for sperm storage and maturation. Epididymal cysts, otherwise known as spermatoceles, are a fluid filled sacks of the epididymis. They are common and found in up to 30 percent of men.

Epididymal cysts are benign (non-cancerous) and often do not require intervention; they are usually small and painless. However, occasionally men develop pain over the site of the cyst or a cyst will grow large enough to be bothersome to the point of needing removal.

When treatment is required, cysts and spermatoceles are removed surgically through a small incision in a short outpatient (no hospital stay) procedure.
