Varicocele

Varicocele is present in up to 1 in 5 men.

What is a varicocele?

A varicocele is a dilation of the veins of the spermatic cord, which supplies blood to the testicle, and is similar to varicose veins often seen in the legs.

Varicoceles are usually asymptomatic (do not cause any pain or discomfort), but some men may have pain in their groin, typically a dull heavy ache that is worse with standing.

Varicoceles are more common on the left side.

Does it need to be treated?

For men who have no bother from their varicocele, no treatment is needed. However, you may consider surgical treatment if:

  • You have pain related to the varicocele

  • The veins are dilated to the point of becoming unsightly

  • You have atrophy (shrinkage) of the testicle on the side of the varicocele

  • You are having difficulty conceiving

How is it treated?

At Central Coast Men’s Health, varicocelectomy is performed under high power magnification using a surgical microscope through a small incision about the width of your thumb.
